I will make a counterpoint, show what I mean in the opposite. I´m talking about experiencing Olivia Rodrigo in concert, a fast paced, happy, energetic, pleasantly nasty experience. She wrapped the audience around her finger from the first bar of the first song, combining a perfectly balanced set with crystal clear vocals and excellent audience management. Not what you would expect from a 21 year old with two records on her name. I danced, I laughed, I smiled and for a couple of hours there was no better place to be than right there, in her audience.amongst her fans.
Now…take the opposite of all I mentioned above. It effectively describes Lana del Rey´s concert at Primavera festival. What could have been a love supreme in the end was nothing more than a love gone sour…
Starting half an hour late…because of your hair…?
Prancing around like a princess in a beauty pageant?
Playing severely shortened versions of songs like auditioning for American idol?
Finishing with a medley of songs to make up for lost time and still pretend a full set was played?
Spending most time taking selfies with your fans at the end of the gig (time that, just a thought, could also have been used playing more songs…)
And why all these dancers? Is your music so energetic it justifies dancers?
Did I watch someone who competes with Beyoncé and Taylor Swift? Is this Instagram made real? WTF…
Troye Sivan, who played just before her, was a sweaty, erotic, very enjoyable experience, so why this, why now, and why did I waste 1.5 hours waiting for her. I could have watched Yeule or so many other amazing artists in the 3 hours I wasted in the end.
…and like that I stopped listening to Lana. Experience influences perception, there is no such thing as objective quality. Some rise, some fall like Icarus, flying too close to the Sun.
