Punk ended on the 29th of January 1977. On that day Buzzcocks released their Spiral Scratch EP. Singer Howard Devoto left the band more or less at the same time, stating that punk rock had already become restrictive and stereotyped. Why did Punk end with Spiral Scratch? Because it was the first punk record to be self-released? No. Because it is absurdly minimalistic? No. Because no other punk record ever struck a better balance between aggression, boredom and nihilism? Not even.
